Singer Island votes on March 11th
Two city council seats and 21 charter amendments will be on the ballot as Islanders head to the Sugar Sands clubhouse to vote on March 11th. Former Council Person Judy Davis is running against District 4 incumbant Norma Duncombe, while District 2, Singer Island, incumbant James "Jim" Jackson is challenged by Dawn Pardo. The Singer Island Civic Association (SICA) has endorsed Dawn Pardo and Judy Davis in these contests, and will soon announce its position on the 20 amendments to the City Charter and Mayor Master's "Baggy Pants" amendment.Jackson, who has been in the news a number of times because of his arrests for domestic disturbances, has attacked SICA and others on the Island for being "racist" and has vowed to end "segregation." The latter charge led one Islander to wonder if Jackson wasn't running in the wrong district. Others trace his bizarre charges to his failure to earn SICA's support. Jackson has resigned as a member of SICA.The charter amendments are described as an attempt to modernize the city charter and make it compatible with state statues. Among the more controversial amendments are changes in council terms from two to three years, automatic pay raises for the council people, and changes in hiring and firing of legislative staff. Considering the length of this list, it is highly advisable that voters read through the charter amendments prior to voting.
