Last week, in a crowded ballroom at the Hilton, Islanders heard a presentation from the City of Riviera Beach on the long-awaited, often-delayed A1A project. If the city's timetable holds, work will begin next year and be finished in 2010. .

According to the drawings shown that evening, East Blue Heron from the bridge up to Ocean Reef Park, continuing as North Ocean Boulevard to Burnt Bridge, will be resurfaced, with Palm Trees and new walkways built. In addition, the Blue Heron Bridge will have new lights as will all of A1A. The total cost of the project, including design, roadway construction and "enhancements," including landscaping, lighting and irrigation, is $10,272,974.

After the presentation, a number of concerns were voiced, including the delays already experienced, irrigation problems along the road, lack of a separate bike path, and lack of safe crossing points. Questions were also raised about the dollar amount not matching the figures previously given to a committee of the Singer Island Civic Association. Since this presentation only represents 30% of the finished design, Islanders can expect a second public meeting in about six months.
